Obama’s leap to socialism
By Dick Morris
Posted: 04/21/09 05:21 PM [ET]
President Obama showed his hand this week when The New York Times wrote that he is considering converting the stock the government owns in our country’s banks from preferred stock, which it now holds, to common stock.

This seemingly insignificant change is momentous. It means that the federal government will control all of the major banks and financial institutions in the nation. It means socialism.

The Times dutifully dressed up the Obama plan as a way to avoid asking Congress for more money for failing banks. But the implications of the proposal are obvious to anyone who cares to look.

When the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) intervention was first outlined by the Bush administration, it did not call for any transfer of stock, of any sort, to the government. The Democrats demanded, as a price for their support, that the taxpayers “get something back” for the money they were lending to the banks. House Republicans, wise to what was going on, rejected the administration’s proposal and sought, instead, to provide insurance to banks, rather than outright cash. Their plan would, of course, not involve any transfer of stock. But Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) undercut his own party’s conservatives and went along with the Democratic plan, ensuring its passage.

But to avoid the issue of a potential for government control of the banks, everybody agreed that the stock the feds would take back in return for their money would be preferred stock, not common stock. “Preferred” means that these stockholders get the first crack at dividends, but only common stockholders can actually vote on company management or policy. Now, by changing this fundamental element of the TARP plan, Obama will give Washington a voting majority among the common stockholders of these banks and other financial institutions. The almost 500 companies receiving TARP money will be, in effect, run by Washington.

And whoever controls the banks controls the credit and, therefore, the economy. That’s called socialism.

Obama is dressing up the idea of the switch to common stock by noting that the conversion would provide the banks with capital they could use without a further taxpayer appropriation. While this is true, it flies in the face of the fact that an increasing number of big banks and brokerage houses are clamoring to give back the TARP money. Goldman-Sachs, for example, wants to buy back its freedom, as do many banks. Even AIG is selling off assets to dig its way out from under federal control. The reason, of course, is that company executives do not like the restrictions on executive pay and compensation that come with TARP money. It is for this reason that Chrysler Motors refused TARP funds.

With bank profits up and financial institutions trying to give back their money, there is no need for the conversion of the government stock from preferred to common — except to advance the political socialist agenda of this administration.

Meanwhile, to keep its leverage over the economy intact, the Obama administration is refusing to let banks and other companies give back the TARP money until they pass a financial “stress test.” Nominally, the government justifies this procedure by saying that it does not want companies to become fully private prematurely and then need more help later on. But don’t believe it. They want to keep the TARP money in the banks so they can have a reason and rationale to control them.

The Times story did not influence the dialogue of the day. People were much more concerned with the death of 21 horses at a polo match. Much as we will miss these noble animals, we will miss our economic freedom more.

With the latest news reports and press releases from the Black House it would appear he is using a considerable number of Bush era ideas and tactics.

Dick Morris (born November 28, 1948) is an American political author and commentator who previously worked as a pollster, political campaign consultant, and general political consultant.

Morris became an adviser to the Bill Clinton administration after Clinton was elected president in 1992. Morris encouraged Clinton to pursue so-called third way policies of triangulation that merged traditional Republican and Democratic proposals, rhetoric, and issues to achieve maximum political gain and popularity. He worked as a Republican strategist before joining the Clinton administration, where he helped Clinton recover from the 1994 midterm elections by convincing the President to adopt Republican policies.[1]

Jesus christ Gypsy you can't ask a simple question without throwing in something about Bush..
Right now if I had to pick a candidate I have no clue. McCain has alot of the right ideas, Jindal needs alot more time to polish is forum, and correct a bunch of issues in Louisiana. Giuliani was on the right track but health has gotten in his way. Hillary is a Bill clone, Palin was on course but needs polishing, and in the next 4 years I am sure many worthy candidates will emerge.

If that is how you feel you must conduct yourself in this forum have at it.
One question, why is the topic of torture being spread thru numerous forums ? Wasn't one sufficient ?

hey moon, i watch Dick Morris on tv alot and i listen to his thoughts close, he is usually right on the mark politically. it is interesting how he developed Clinton but now blast him and Hillary, when she ran for prez. i think he has came back but remember when he got caught with the hooker, i think when in the Clinton administration, but i admit i forgot the hooker time frame, i could look it up, but its not that important, its been out a while , his last book is " Fleeced" unless he has a new one but i dont think so,
take care,,

And I think your quick analysis is just right. I couldn't bring myself to watch the press conference last night. What would be the point? Bush gets up there and the press tears him apart. Good. That's their job. Obama gets up there, and the ass kissing is loud and sloppy. Obama is "enchanted"? He must be. The media refuses to give Bush free time for national addresses (not press confs) except for two times in his admin (8 years) but Obama gets 3 in 100 days. Yesterday,we hear that the two most important components of our economy, manufacturing and construction, are shrinking by 6.1% per year. Net income for the first quarter is down by $60 billion yet consumer spending is UP! To those who don't know what socialism is and those who do and desire it,this is very good news, indeed. The message? "Spend like crazy,Obama-san will help you". The true-believers simply ignore the fact that all this borrowed money must be paid back to those who purchased the notes. Pretending they don't exist is stupid. ONLY major increases in taxes will pay that debt. As expected, the stimulus money has stimulated NOTHING. The Obama-lites will continue to blame Bush long past the point where it could conceiviably make any sense because people just don't know enough to see what the real deal is. Next year, the congressional campaigning will start and the press will NOT be able to avoid the truths that need to be told. Unfortunately, this incredible debt will not be reversible and this brief experiment in socialism will injure this country for many years. Until unemployment rates diminish and the production of real goods and housing increases, this economy is failing and can only get worse. The Obama-lites will say "But Obama SAID the economy HE inherited woul take a long time to fix!". No he didn't. He said he was going to put 5 million people to work in 2 years. He said he would prevent the dissolution of major industries. He is clearly failing.
